Robinson R22 Trial Lesson

A trial lesson in a Robinson R22 helicopter is the way most private pilots started their flying careers. This small, lightweight helicopter is by far the most popular choice for those learning due to its simplicity and low running costs.

A trial lesson will involve a ground briefing (often in the cockpit) followed by the flight itself. The primary topics covered within a trial lesson will include;

  • The fundamentals of how the helicopter works
  • The individual flight controls, their purpose and operation
  • A basic understanding of the flight instruments.

After take-off from Shoreham airport the student will have the opportunity to;

  • Manipulate each control in flight and
  • See how the helicopter responds visually or via the cockpit instruments
  • Follow the instructor through on some of more complex manoeuvres
  • Have a go at hovering
  • Experience radio communication with air traffic control.

Note: If the student is above 17st (108kg) in weight or over 6ft 2” (1.88m) in height the R22 may not be suitable. Please see the Robinson R44.

  • Yesterday I had a flying lesson on a Robinson R44 helicopter, something I had wanted to try for a long time. I reported to Shoreham / Brighton airport and met my instructor John Davies. He explained things in a very easy to understand way and then we were off. We flew towards Brighton over the beaches. The weather was kind and visibility was good, so good we could see the Isle of Wight in the distance. John let me have some experience of the flight controls and after I relaxed I found it not to difficult to fly reasonably level and in the correct direction/ish. Hovering was something requiring some practice but John soon took control again and I had another try. Mmmm, lots of practise needed, I think. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and recommend you try a flight with John, a man of great skill and limitless patience as helicopters are not the easiest thing to get used to. If you can, have a go, it's great fun and quite an achievement if you can do it. Thank you John, I will come back for another flight lesson soon.
